Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid Review

BB8 DroidThe Star Wars Universe was reawakened with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and  a whole new generation of fans has been created.  It is not surprising to see a new droid become one of the most marketable and popular characters to emerge from the new film.

BB-8, that clever spherical droid with a mind of its own, is the latest app-enabled droid.  You can use the app on a tablet or smartphone app for hours of fun with your very own BB-8 droid!

Features of the Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid

•    Reacts to your voice
•    Android and iOS compatible
•    60 min battery life
•    Top speed 4.5 mph

The Cost

The cost varies depending on the supplier. I have seen it sell for anywhere between $114 and $159.  When you buy online, make sure you check the shipping costs as they can vary widely.  Amazon fulfills orders from many different vendors with various prices.

BB-8 is well designed and appears to be an almost perfect scaled replica of the film version.

The charging station is neat and BB-8 is easy to set up – his head literally clicks into place.

All you need to do is download the app and you are ready to go.

Driving him around is great fun and while there is a learning curve in controlling his movements, that quickly becomes second nature.

BB-8 can explore the room on his own, traveling around bumping into things and generally having a look everywhere he can roll to.

The advertisements for BB-8 seem to imply that he learns about his environment and adapts to it. Not sure this is true – leave him in a room and will keep bumping into the same things over and over.

If he has built up enough speed, his head can also fall off if he collides with something at full speed.

It is also worth keeping BB-8 away from carpeted floors that have pet hair on them, as he will collect that hair like a small spherical vacuum.

Also, avoid stairs.  He cannot tell they are there are may not survive a fall down the stairs onto a hard floor.

The sounds and ‘hologram’ come from the app on your smart device, not the unit itself.

Is the Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid Worth Buying?

Amazon customers give this little droid a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars from over 1700 reviews.  All in all, BB-8 is nifty and impressive looking toy that fans of Star Wars and collectors will absolutely adore but make sure you know what you are getting before you buy.  Watch the video above – the Sphero is the little one on the right.
